KEA News NZ Update with KEA's most recent news http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news.aspx http://backend.userland.com/rss KEA Achieves Enviro Certification Hot off the back of our Qualmark Enviro-Gold Rating, KEA New Zealand has once again been recognised for our commitment to the environment by being awarded carbonNZero (CertTM) certification as part of the KEAgreen environmental programme.

The carboNZero programme is the world’s first internationally accredited greenhouse gas (GHG) certification scheme for organisations, products, services and events. Run by Landcare Research in New Zealand, it focuses on the measurement, management (reduction) and mitigation (offset) of GHG emissions.

Following a management and reduction plan which was developed in conjunction with the carboNZero programme, there was an external audit of all emissions relating to KEA's rental and sales business. As a result corporate emissions, including customer fuel use, flights, courtesy transport, electricity use and waste, for year ending June 2008 were offset by purchasing verified carbon credits from the TrustPower Tararua ll Windpower project in Manawatu. In the future there is a view to reduce all emissions further.

“As an industry leader, KEA considers it vital to show our commitment to environmental sustainability by achieving carboNZero certification for our organisation,” said KEA CEO, Grant Brady.

“We are confident that the methodology and expertise we have access to through the carboNZero programme will assist us in truly reducing our emissions and developing a sustainable plan for the future.”

KEA’s management and reduction plan includes a strategy to reduce kilometres per hire by improving fleet management, increasing minimum hire days and increasing the use of GPS.

“While water recycling and alternative energy sources will be the focus of KEA’s corporate initiatives in 2010, in the longer term we plan to work with vehicle manufacturers to encourage the production of more efficient vehicles, and introduce a lighter, more aerodynamic motorhome to our fleet,” Mr Brady said.

KEA currently has the most environmentally-friendly vehicles in the industry. Every vehicle features solar paneling, renewable materials, the most advanced emission control standards, best-practice waste management systems and the lowest fuel consumption rates of any campervan rental company across Australia, New Zealand and Southern Africa.

Established in 2001, the carboNZero programme is based on over a decade of research on climate change, greenhouse gas measurement and carbon monitoring. A practical approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the programme provides the tools and robust certification process to assist individuals, organisations and events to reduce their carbon footprint.

For more information on KEA’s environmental initiatives, contact Grant Brady on +64 9 441 7833 or visit www.keagreen.co.nz. Our directive is to operate the most environmentally-friendly and fuel-efficient motorhomes and campervans on the market, as well as taking a holistic view of how we support the environment and the New Zealand economy. We see sustainability as encompassing the habits of our customers and staff, working with the community, reducing waste going to landfill, reducing fuel and energy usage and showing constant innovation in the development of our product.

KEA has the most environmentally-friendly vehicles in the industry. Every vehicle coming out of our factory features solar paneling, renewable and recyclable materials used in the construction process, the most advanced emission control standards, best-practice waste management systems and the lowest fuel consumption rates of any campervan rental company across Australia, New Zealand and Southern Africa.

Here in New Zealand, KEA is also Green Globe benchmarked and as most of you will know we were the first campervan and motorhome company to have vehicles certified self-contained through the NZMCA, something we are very proud of. Qualmark is New Zealand tourism's official mark of quality. All accommodation and tourism businesses that carry the Qualmark logo have been independently assessed on their environmental performance, so travellers can book their travels and buy with confidence. For more information on Qualmark visit www.qualmark.co.nz.

Another issue which I believe needs some serious debate is the one surrounding freedom camping. The Freedom Camping Forum was convened last year by the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) following growing concerns about the impacts of freedom camping in several parts of the country. The object of this forum was the development of a “responsible freedom camping code” setting out education and advice for visitors on respecting the environment and camping responsibly including information on acceptable disposal of toilet waste and rubbish, and links to information about where freedom camping is allowed.

But the Coromandel has recently made freedom camping illegal and people caught camping or overnight parking will be fined. In my opinion New Zealand as a whole took a backward step when Coromandel banned freedom camping, all it will do is make criminals out of a lot of innocent people whose only crime is to enjoy some of our fantastic scenery and beaches, which I believe is our right as Kiwis anyway.

In 2011 when New Zealand is on the world stage for the rugby world cup our “100% Pure New Zealand” reputation will be on view and our reputation as a pristine country will be on the line. There will be a massive amount of people visiting our shores from all parts of the world to follow their teams and they’ll be travelling in cars, boats, planes and motorhomes. We know that all those people renting campers from KEA will have vehicles that are self contained that could be taken into the Corommandel and would leave no trace when they leave, but there will be some who will either buy an old clanger or rent a cheapie that may not be self contained….but guess what, they’re still going to travel to the likes of Coromandel or wherever and they will free camp, they’ll just be sneaky about it, and you know some of them will do the wrong thing as well but you can’t legislate against that and expect it to stop happening.

Trying to stop freedom camping won’t work ……………..We need to educate not prosecute!

For more information on KEA’s sustainability strategy and environmentally friendly camping holidays, visit www.keacampers.co.nz or call us on 0800 52 00 55 toll free from anywhere in New Zealand.
http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-11-26/Freedom_Camping_–_Educate.aspx Steve Lane http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-11-26/Freedom_Camping_%e2%80%93_Educate.aspx 4019b804-c796-4087-8b4a-71422788989f Thu, 26 Nov 2009 17:52:13 GMT KEA New Zealand Bio Diesel Project After a year of evaluation and testing, KEA Campers is successfully running our Auckland transfer coach on 100% bio diesel.

KEA has introduced many environmental initiatives over the years, including sponsoring the introduction of many dump stations throughout New Zealand, ensuring vehicle engines comply with the highest European/international emissions standards and fitting solar panels to all vehicles. Recently KEA was awarded Qualmark Enviro-Gold status for our environmental performance and commitment. We continue to strive to make a positive contribution to the environment with a number of small targeted projects.

In December 2008 KEA joined forces with New Zealand Ester Fuels www.nzef.co.nz, a New Zealand bio fuel producer. Throughout the first half of 2009 we worked together with NZEF to develop a suitable fuel which used waste products, was 100% bio diesel and met the New Zealand Standard. We also had to ensure the fuel would be suitable for our 2008 Ford Transit transfer coach - the same vehicle as our rental fleet’s 2ST. The fuel that has been developed is derived from used vegetable oils collected from restaurants and chicken cooking/processing operations.

Using our Auckland transfer coach has been perfect for this project for two reasons: Firstly we could provide a positive first and/or last experience to our customers as their travel to and from the airport would be 100% on non fossil fuel, and secondly, the vehicle runs in a controlled environment from the KEA depot back and forward to the Auckland Airport, doing approximately 60,000 kms per year – allowing ample opportunity for testing.

In July 2009 we set up our own fuel tank and started at a 20% blend of bio diesel and 80% diesel, and in September we increased this to 50% of each. Throughout this time we have been conducting fortnightly oil testing to ensure engine wear is not adversely affected by the bio diesel.

In the medium term, KEA would like to fuel more company vehicles on bio diesel and in the longer term we hope to use bio diesel in some form for our rental fleet.

For more information on this project or KEA’s other environmental initiatives, please contact Bruce Richardson on +64 9 441 7833 or visit www.keagreen.co.nz. http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-11-24/KEA_New_Zealand_Bio_Diesel_Project.aspx lynnbriggs http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-11-24/KEA_New_Zealand_Bio_Diesel_Project.aspx d36a004a-67fc-4d54-b22a-59ad10709e9b Tue, 24 Nov 2009 21:06:54 GMT KEA NZ Awarded Enviro-Gold We are pleased to announce that KEA has this month been recognised for its commitment to sustainable tourism by being awarded a Qualmark Enviro-Gold rating.

Designed to help consumers recognise top performing green businesses, the rating is assessed against environmental practices and acknowledges businesses for initiatives in energy efficiency, waste management, water conservation and community activities.

“Sustainability and environmental responsibility have always been a top priority at KEA. Providing training for staff also gives them confidence that the company cares about their personal growth,” she says.

KEA staff are currently involved in ATTTO Modern Apprenticeships, National Certificates in Travel, National Certificates in Business (First Line Management), as well as customer service training.

So far, 14 KEA staff have attended the ATTTO Customer Experience Award Workshop, designed to help employees gain a better understanding of their role in customer service, and how they can exceed customer expectations within their workplace.

“Consistently outstanding customer service is paramount to our business. We were very happy with the Customer Experience course. All participants agreed that they learned a great deal; even those with prior training in customer service felt that it was a good refresher. The facilitator was knowledgeable and entertaining and kept it really interesting,” she says.

Tamara frequently meets with her ATTTO Business Development Advisor (BDA) to work on how they can improve on the job training.

“Learning on the job means that staff can see firsthand how to apply their learned skills in their daily work. This is a great motivator, and prompts staff to constantly question what we can do better and how we can improve the day-to-day running of our business,” she says.

“Our external and internal customer service skills have improved in all departments of KEA. We look forward to continuing to use ATTTO courses to ensure we’re providing the best service possible.” she says.

The team at KEA who completed the ATTTO Customer Experience Workshop in June, 2009. Big dreams for an eleven year old eh !!! While I never quite made it to the moon I’ve covered a good few kilometres around the world in my short life and been lucky enough to visit some pretty amazing places and meet some very special people along the way.

I remember travelling through Europe in 1985 in a 1971 VW Kombi that had already been to the moon and back. It had been around Europe at least six times before we bought it and I know it did again at least twice after we sold it and who knows how many more after that. There were three of us crammed into a pretty small wagon and we spent nearly six months doing the tourist trail from England to Greece and back again. In what was my first taste of freedom camping, we would gather with other Kiwi’s and Aussies at night and set up a wagon train circle of vehicles to eat, drink and laugh a lot ,sometimes over an open fire, and the next day we would clean up our campsite and drive off into a new day. I remember in Italy the wine was cheaper than bottled water, and in Greece the wine was too horrible to drink. In France we nearly lost our pop top roof in a storm and blew two tyres in one day, but what the heck. Our little Kombi had probably the smallest 3 way fridge I’d ever seen and only enough room to sleep two people inside so I slept outside on a lilo every night. But who cares about sleeping rough when the next big adventure is just around the next corner.

Those memories of my early travel experiences came back to me after we recently attended a show to display and promote our campervans & motorhomes. We had some incredible interest in the KEA “Traveller” 2 + 2 flip top campervan that we manufacture. The KEA “Traveller” is based on the VW Californian, a modern version of the Kombi from all those years ago, it’s built on a VW van chassis and fitted out by KEA as a great camper for two and a people mover for four with comfortable rear seating and seat belting for the extra passengers. It has a full hot water system, fridge/freezer, TV/DVD, solar panels and loads more features. We had a funky red one on display and it was like bees to a honey pot with people swarming all over it to check it out. And the number of people who I talked to who had also done their own Kombi travels was just amazing and the stories flowed like wine. It just goes to show that once you’ve been bitten by the travel bug the itch never leaves you. It left me with a huge smile on my face all weekend after that and I’m now looking forward to my next adventure in a KEA camper ........ and I’m not waiting for spring. Life is just too short so get out there and enjoy this great country of ours.

If you would like to know more about our VW campers please give me a call on 0800 52 00 55.

Steve Lane, KEA Campers (NZ) Ltd http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-08-06/To_the_moon_and_back.aspx yvonne http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-08-06/To_the_moon_and_back.aspx 92448b32-fffb-4754-afaf-20e87a407b86 Wed, 05 Aug 2009 17:02:15 GMT Hippy Gourmet Visits NZ The team from Hippy Gourmet (a popular TV show in the USA) recently travelled by KEA around New Zealand. View some of their adventures on YouTube. http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-06-19/Hippy_Gourmet_Visits_NZ.aspx lynnbriggs http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-06-19/Hippy_Gourmet_Visits_NZ.aspx a30d818d-e07b-4a63-bb13-4dceadf488f9 Fri, 19 Jun 2009 00:24:14 GMT Richard Till: A fork and the road Richard Till trades up from caravan to campervan as he heads off on a trip down memory lane. We don’t want them to get half way to Wellington, or wherever, and have to buy more road user tax, registration or find they need a service.

Our whole approach to campervans and motorhomes is different - from the design, the materials and techniques used in construction through to the equipment we fit and the amount of time the vehicles spend in our rental fleet.

We choose vehicles from the world’s biggest manufacturers including Ford and VW ensuring that our customers have the greatest number of service agents to choose from wherever they travel throughout New Zealand.

People who purchase our pre owned campervans and motorhomes get higher spec vehicles with lower km’s at a reasonable price. They can enjoy the benefits of our design and build experience at a much-reduced cost.

KEA’s Campers are sold after just two and a half years. After that short time the sharp edge is gone from the depreciation of a new vehicle – and yet they are as good as new because KEA has gone the extra mile by using high quality construction materials and fittings. This really shows that building quality at the start pays real dividends later.

For example, the cabinet construction is the strongest system we could find – including cams and dowels and full gluing. The furniture is crafted from lightweight plywood made from renewable plantation grown timber and coated with an environmentally friendly veneer.

The drawers feature a metal-sided system with integrated runners that are easy to clean and robust. All electrical wiring is marine grade. The macro hide seat and squab coverings are hard wearing and are still like new at the time of sale, but we shampoo and steam clean them anyway.

When the campervans and motorhomes come off the rental fleet they are returned to KEA Manufacturing Company (KMC) for a thorough inspection. The carpets are replaced, all cabinetry is inspected, the hinges and catches are checked and replaced if necessary and any damage to any part of the interior is repaired. As well as this, all the gas, water and electrical appliances are inspected and serviced as necessary.

The outside fibreglass panels are finished with hard-wearing gel-coat, and if necessary this is repaired and repainted using tough two-pot finishes. The KEA rental livery is removed and replaced with our modern stripes. All joins and seals, including the roof vents, are re-siliconed. Any imperfections in the metal bodywork are also refurbished.

Mechanically, the campers are thoroughly inspected and given a full service, including new oil, air and fuel filters. Brake’s, tyres and batteries are also checked and renewed or replaced as necessary.

Warranties are always important when purchasing for obvious reasons. In many cases purchasers of our campers have the balance of the manufacturer’s warranty left to run but KEA also offers a 90 day unconditional warranty so that anyone purchasing a campervan or motorhome from us can be assured that we stand by our product 100 per cent. If they find anything they are not happy with we will repair it. We also welcome anybody to carry out an independent inspection on any campervan prior to purchase. As if that’s not enough we also give a 3 year Autosure “Extreme Cover” mechanical breakdown insurance policy free of charge to all purchases.

At KEA we want our customers to drive away knowing they have invested in a campervan or motorhome that will hold its value better than any other.

If you buy a KEA we want you to drive away knowing you have nothing to worry about and to go away happy. The success of our philosophy is proven by the number of our customers who come back to upgrade their campers.

So please give me a call if you would like to know more about KEA, our campers or you’d like to visit our factories and see how we build New Zealand’s best motorhomes. http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-05-01/Don_t_Worry_Be_Happy.aspx lynnbriggs http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-05-01/Don_t_Worry_Be_Happy.aspx 1c4c6f2c-f133-4af8-a308-158eb651d01f Thu, 30 Apr 2009 18:44:00 GMT Motorhome Industry In Good Shape Steve's regular column - as seen in the NZMCA's Motor Caravanner magazine

The National motorhome and caravan expo which was held in Hamilton recently was a resounding success with plenty of interest from across the country. I think it showed that our industry is in pretty good shape overall and people are realising there’s never been a better time to hit the road and enjoy their own back yard.

The crowds were great and although the weather wasn’t as good as we would have all liked the atmosphere was fantastic with some very nice motorhomes on display with some very nice features. We had our biggest display ever at the show and I reckon our KEA’s stacked up pretty well against some of the other very expensive models there. I think this industry is very much coming of age and one thing in particular I noticed is that the motorhome buyer of today is very knowledgeable both in technical terms but also with what they want and expect to achieve with their travels.

It was also really nice to see so many people looking to buy New Zealand made and asking the question “where are these built”. That’s something that KEA is very proud to do and in these “interesting economical times” it’s good to know you’re supporting the New Zealand economy with jobs for Kiwis if you buy a locally made motorhome.

This type of show is also a must see for anyone looking to purchase for the first time as it gives a fantastic opportunity to compare all brands of motorhomes in one place. But if you can’t get to a show such as this my advice is to take some time to look around at all the different models on the market. What you first look at might not actually be the best for you. One of the best pieces of advice I can give to anyone looking to purchase a motorhome is to talk to other motorhome owners and get their advice...............they’ve all “been there done that”. Another option is to “try before you buy” and KEA can help here. If you rent one of our motorhomes or campervans in New Zealand or Australia we will refund up to 7 days off the purchase price if you buy within 12 months. That means you could rent in Australia, buy in New Zealand and you get the money back for your Australian rental.......a free holiday, that’s a pretty good deal I reckon. Give us a call on 0800 52 00 55 if you would like to know more.

And to all the folks we have met before and all the KEA owners who visited us at our stand, thanks for dropping by, it’s always good to see familiar faces and hear some great stories of peoples travels.

Happy travels and I look forward to seeing you in Kaikohe. http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-03-01/Motorhome_Industry_In_Good_Shape.aspx lynnbriggs http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-03-01/Motorhome_Industry_In_Good_Shape.aspx 81fdc475-6298-4a31-bb84-4ad8de21cf68 Sat, 28 Feb 2009 17:17:00 GMT Let's All Stay at Home! Steve's regular column - as seen in the NZMCA's Motor Caravanner magazine

THE WORLDS GOING MAD – LETS ALL STAY AT HOME

Happy new year everyone, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas wherever you were lucky enough to spend it, I personally had a very quiet one with friends and family and probably a little too much good food and drink, but it was great to spend it right here in New Zealand.

Since I got back from my Christmas break I’ve been hearing some wonderful stories of other people’s travels and all of them have a similar theme, relaxed and carefree times at beautiful places, everywhere from Akaroa to Waihi beach. It made me think of a fantastic holiday I had as an eighteen year old. Me and two mates packed up the car and we spent January winding our way around East Cape heading towards Gisborne camping on the coast along the way. I remember three days camped at Te Kaha, diving during the day and at night sitting in a tent playing cards and drinking beer. It was all we could do because it rained like hell for three days solid.......but it was a fantastic holiday and it got me thinking that I’ve just got to go there again soon.

So with rest of the world going a wee bit crazy right now and with the dollar in decline travelling to places like the United States, Europe and even Australia has become expensive, I reckon there’s never been a better time to stay at home and re-acquaint yourself with your own back yard.......and forget the tent do it in style in your motorhome (even better if it’s in a KEA). We are so lucky to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world and if you plan it well New Zealand is not an expensive place to travel. Stocking up on your basic supplies before you leave will save you plenty and buying local fresh produce along the way supports local business as well.

The other must do before you leave home is to make sure your vehicle is in good shape and that’s where The KEA Service & Retail Centre can help.

Located at KEA Manufacturing in Albany, Auckland the centre offers a full range of servicing, from a pre-travel service check to make sure your vehicle is in top condition before the big trip, or a full repair job or accessory purchase and fitting.

Our highly experienced team will offer both interior and exterior vehicle repairs, including specialised fibreglass exterior work. Full refurbishment and modifications to KEA vehicles are also available and we can cater to other vehicle models and types, although KEA clients will receive priority service at busy times. And the retail shop which is an exciting extension to KEA’s operation with a full range of products and accessories to purchase, from toilet chemicals to satellite dishes.

The KEA Service and Retail Centre is located at 1 Piermark Drive, Albany, Auckland 09 448-1627.

So with Christmas behind us, the best weather yet to come and months of summer holidays still ahead, it’s time to pack up the camper and plan the big trip away……….I wish you all safe and happy travels wherever you may go. http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-01-01/Let_s_All_Stay_at_Home.aspx lynnbriggs http://nzsales.keacampers.com/about/news/09-01-01/Let_s_All_Stay_at_Home.aspx 269d3926-7f07-41ca-8c95-97cdf21e842e Wed, 31 Dec 2008 17:21:00 GMT Freedom Camping Expertise Offered The New Zealand Freedom Camping Forum (NZFCF) has launched a website www.camping.org.nz and supporting promotional material to encourage freedom campers to “ask a local” before they pitch a tent or park a campervan.
